Private investigator, monster hunter, frequent customer of bawdy houses (a little less so lately), and part-time apocalypse-causer, Kaine has been a fixture of his neck of Waterdeep for over a decade, operating as Mystic Eyes Investigations. Before that, he did other things, for about 262 years. Kaine is immortal, thanks to his devilish bloodline. He was born in Ascalhorn, and was present for its fall (partially his fault). His father sold his soul, and that of his two sons, to an infernal overlord. Kaine never consented to anything, and so inherited some of his father's fel powers, but no allegiance to his dark lord. Still, he operates under the assumption that he is inevitably damned, if not for his blood, then for his inumerable venial sins (and a good number of mortal ones), most of which are ways of appeasing his infernal nature and keeping it at bay, but some are just for the fun of it.
History
Short Version
- Born in 1126 in Hellgate Keep: a single-city kingdom bounded by magical wards which no fiend can escape (its inhabitants prefer to call it by its original name, Ascalhorn)
- Everybody in the city is a tiefling to some degree, but the ruling class has the strongest infernal blood
- His father Balduras was the ruling lord, inheriting his throne long ago (multiple centuries old)
- Mother was a mortal witch adventurer who Balduras captured and forced into servitude
- His birth was an attempt to create servile scions who were mortal enough to leave the confines of the city
- Tiberius' "Uncle Galateus" (secretly Hagar, an arch-fiend in service to their infernal master) convinces the boy to rebel against his father
- The rebellion kicks off on Tiberius' 16th birthday, when he is meant to undergo a ritual to fully come into his infernal power (as his elder brother had already done). Tiberius refuses, and plays his hand. Surprisingly, the rebellion goes well enough for him to escape, along with his brother. The breeding program worked, it seemed, as they were free to escape, but he could not save his mother. He parted ways with his brother for a long time.
- Played the role of knight-errant for centuries, an itinerant adventure always on the lookout for some noble quest, or at least a good whorehouse to shack up in.
- Settled in Waterdeep in the 1300s, and eventually met Sid. Not long after, founded Mystic Eyes Investigations.
- Took in Penelope Wright in 1371. She eventually became a fellow investigator. They married in 1385, after causing a mild apocalypse in an admittedly successful attempt to free his brother from Hell, slay his father, and break his bond with his infernal overlord.
